Virtual yarrow stalks

Consult the I Ching with a JavaScript simulation of the yarrow stalks method

You can choose between two versions of the simulation:

• Virtual yarrow stalks full

  Sort of 3D animated, shows every step of sorting the yarrow stalks. You can change animation speed, or even disable it altogether, at any time during the consultation.

• Virtual yarrow stalks simple

  The older version of the simulation, definitely 2D, shows only the result of each sorting.

Both simulations allow to read the text of each resulting hexagram in two different translations:

• The classic Wilhelm-Baynes:
  Richard Wilhelm's and Cary F. Baynes translation "I Ching: Or, Book of Changes"
  [ 3rd. ed., Bollingen Series XIX, (Princeton NJ: Princeton University Press, 1967, 1st ed. 1950)]

• An outstanding, strictly contemporary work, freely available online:
  Yi Jing, book of sun and moon (by LiSe Heyboer)
  (LiSe's site now includes two more versions of Virtual yarrow stalks, specially dedicated to her translation.)

If you want to learn the yarrow stalks method you can read the explanations on I Ching with Clarity (a site with a self-explanatory name...) and Earth Heart (where you can also find some good quality real yarrow stalks).

Finally, for both versions of the simulation, be aware that:

• Script execution must be enabled in your browser, otherwise they won't work at all
• Refreshing the page during the consultation acts like a reset: everything is wiped out and you get back to the initial form
