David Herbert Lawrence, the famous English writer, loved Italy. He travelled through it far and wide, often on foot. Sardinia inspired him and he dedicated his fine book to it, "Sea and Sardinia", where he wrote: "Sardinia is left outside of time and history". Of course, nowhere is left outside of time and history. But Lawrence's affirmation has a certain "poetic" truth, which captures and sums up a sensation which unites everyone who goes to Sardinia: the sensation of finding oneself in a region where the stunning beauty of nature, the limpid waters of the sea, the reserved and genuine character of the people, the exquisiteness of the many typical dishes, the ancient traditions, and the various expressions of Sardinian culture, will never change. In spite of the twists and turns of history, and in spite of the passing of time. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Byzantines and Spanish all arrived in this splendid island: Sardinia assimilated and reinterpreted all these different influences, integrated them into its own culture, but did not allow its heart, its own profound way of feeling, to be touched or changed. Just as the physical heart of Sardinia, the area of Gennargentu (now a splendid National Park), has always been inaccessible to foreigners. All this gives a unique and original flavour to a holiday in Sardinia. The visitor feels reassured, "guaranteed" by this sensation of unchangeability: as if here, even in the most modern and built-up areas of the island, everything continues to be more authentic, more genuine than elsewhere. It is so at Cagliari as it is at Nuoro, at Sassari as it is at Oristano, at Alghero as it is on the Emerald Coast: wherever the tourist chooses to enjoy the magnificent sea or visit museums, to study the mystery of the "nuraghi" or to try a delicious typical dish. Wherever you are, you will feel that you are doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right place.

David Herbert Lawrence, famoso scrittore inglese del primo 900, amava l’Italia. La girò in lungo e in largo, spesso a piedi. La Sardegna lo entusiasmò e lui le dedicò un bel libro, “Sea and Sardinia”, dove scrisse: «La Sardegna è fuori dal tempo e dalla storia». Nessun luogo, naturalmente, è fuori dal tempo e dalla storia. Eppure, l’affermazione di Lawrence ha una sua verità “poetica”, coglie e semplifica una sensazione che accomuna tutti quelli che si recano in Sardegna: la sensazione, appunto, di trovarsi in una regione dove la bellezza stupefacente della natura, le infinite trasparenze del mare, la riservatezza e il calore della gente, la squisitezza dei piatti tipici, le tradizioni ancestrali, il fascino degli antichi costumi, le varie manifestazioni della cultura sarda non muteranno mai. Nonostante le vicende della storia, nonostante il trascorrere del tempo.
In questa splendida isola sono arrivati i Fenici, i Cartaginesi, i Romani, gli Arabi, i Bizantini, gli Spagnoli: la Sardegna ha assimilato e rielaborato le più diverse influenze, le ha integrate nella propria cultura, aprendosi al mondo e offrendo il meglio di sé, ma non ha permesso che il suo “cuore” profondo e appassionato, il suo carattere forte e generoso ne fossero toccati e mutati. Così come il cuore fisico della Sardegna, l’area del Gennargentu, oggi Parco Nazionale, da sempre rifugio per le antiche popolazioni, ha saputo salvaguardare fino ai nostri gironi, come uno scrigno prezioso, tesori naturalistici di inestimabile valore.
Tutto questo dà un sapore unico, originale ad una vacanza in Sardegna. Il visitatore si sente rassicurato, garantito da questa senzazione di immutabilità: come se qui, anche nelle zone più moderne, urbanizzate e attrezzate dell’isola, tutto si conservasse più autentico, più vero che altrove. E’ così a Cagliari come a Nuoro, a Sassari come ad Oristano, ad Alghero come in Costa Smeralda: ovunque il turista scelga di godersi il magnifico mare o la bellezza dei boschi e dei graniti, o di visitare chiese e musei, di scrutare il mistero degli imponenti, millenari “nuraghi” che vigilano su colli e altipiani, o di immergersi nelle mille feste popolari, o di gustare un buon arrosto fumante. Ovunque egli avrà la sensazione di fare la cosa giusta, al momento giusto, nel posto giusto.
