ALBERTO SORDI TURNS 80
On June 15th, 2000, Alberto Sordi turned 80.

Not too often the birthday of a showman is a great event. But for Rome, Alberto has become much more than an actor, a comedian or an author, he is now a legend.
And on this special date, his city decided to celebrate him in the best possible way: he was symbolically elected Mayor of Rome for one day.
No other movie artist had ever received such a warm tribute.

At 10 AM, in the Town Hall on the Capitolium hill, Rome's Mayor Francesco Rutelli handed his decorations to Alberto, who also received greetings by the Italian President and the Premier.

At 12 AM he reopened Torre delle Milizie, a 13th century tower located by Trajan's Markets, recently restored.
In the evening, he was once again the guest of honour at the Town Hall, while one of his most famous movies was shown in the Capitolium Square, packed with his fans.

June 15th, 2000 has been a day to remember, for both the artist and the city.

Many happy returns Alberto, and thank you for becoming one of Rome's most popular symbols in the world.
